The honest answer: sooner than most people think, but not so early that your plans might change. Booking is easy to do yourself once you know your date. The trick is understanding which dates fill up first so you are not left scrambling.
A simple rule of thumb
- Local move, flexible date: two to three weeks ahead is comfortable.
- Local move, specific weekend or month-end date: three to four weeks, since those go first.
- Long-distance or interstate: four to six weeks, so timing and routing line up.
- Peak summer (June to September): add a week or two to all of the above.
Why the calendar matters
Leases and closings cluster around the first and last few days of the month, and most people want a Saturday. That means the end of the month and every weekend book up well before mid-week dates. If you can move on a Tuesday or Wednesday, you will have far more options and often a better rate.
What to have ready when you book
- Your move date, and a backup if possible.
- Both addresses, with stairs, elevators, or gate access noted.
- A rough inventory, especially large or heavy items.
- Whether you want packing help or just the move.
Common mistakes
- Assuming you can always get a Saturday next week. You often cannot.
- Waiting on a lease or closing date to be "final" before even asking about availability.
- Booking without mentioning stairs or a long carry, which changes the crew and time.
What about a last-minute move?
It happens, and it is not hopeless. Mid-week dates open up, and cancellations free up spots. If your date is close, call anyway. Our local moving crews can often fit in short-notice and next-day jobs when the schedule allows.
Estimated time
Booking itself takes one phone call or quote request. The lead time you build in ahead of it is what keeps your first-choice date open.
Local note: In Santa Clarita, summer and the end of every month are the busiest windows. If your move lands in one of those, reach out earlier than you think you need to.
